Under the Mantle

In I Kings 19 the Bible tells us of a time when the Prophet Elijah was going through a difficult time in his life. Elijah was a great man of God who lived a life completely dedicated to God. He performed great miracles during his ministry and God used him in a powerful and supernatural way. The Bible tells us that everything the Lord asked him to do he would do it - regardless of the danger and discomfort to his own life. He was a man zealous for the things of God and loved the Lord with all his heart yet he too went through a time of discouragement. Chapter 19 states that after Elijah proved to the nation of Israel and to the followers of Baal that Jehova God is the one true God, Queen Jezabel came against him threatening to kill him. This was not an empty threat for she had alread killed hundreds of the Lord's prophets. So, Elijah had a very good reason for being affraid. He also felt discouraged because he knew that he had been living a righteous life and had done everything the Lord had told him to do. He had seen King Ahab and Queen Jezabel destroy and influence the nation of Israel with their Baal worship and immoral lifestyle. It grieved him to see the spiritual decline of the nation of God. So, when the Lord had told him to do something about it he had readily gone and confronted Ahab to tell him that it would not rain in Israel. He then went to the Brook Cherith and later to Zarepath and from there to Mt. Carmel all under the orders from God. So, you can imagine how disappointed he felt when after having done all it seemed as though he was about to die and King Ahab and Queen Jezabel were still in control. But this is where Elijah did the most important thing in his life. When things got really bad he ran to the Mountain of God, he fasted and he hid under his mantle where he received his orders that ultimately destroyed Ahab and Jezabel. It was in that secret place where he heard the voice of God and was encouraged. I believe God must have told him "You're not going to die by the hand of the enemy because you belong to me". God is in control - even when the enemy is making threats - God is still in control. It is our responsibility to do as Elijah did and get to the presence of God to hear our next marching orders. Under the mantle - alone with God - can change everything!
